“Hello, Annabelle speaking.”
“Belle, Nick’s leaving today. Are you coming?”
“No, I’ve got work to do.”
“Oh, I thought given the…”
“Look, Jon, I’m busy. Gotta go.”
It was seven in the morning and in another hour and half later, Nicholas would be out of the neighborhood, out of the country and maybe, possibly, out of her life as well. For how long? No one in the group knew because even he is unsure of that.
Annabelle was not sure of what she should do. She lied about having work to do. She had finished her article almost 3 hours ago and the printing was already in progress, she had more than enough time to go home, freshen herself up and see Nicholas off. But she refused to. So much has happened over the last two months that she no longer understand what’s going on anymore. She haven’t had the energy needed to deal with it.
Deep in her thoughts, her cellphone's rings sent a wave of shock over her before she picked up the call.
“Annabelle speaking.”
“It’s me, Belle. Nick. I’m glad you picked up the call; I really need to meet you.”
Silence hung in the air, as Annabelle couldn’t believe that Nicholas was the person at the other end. The person she began to avoid since ten days ago. She felt tears welling up in her eyes, she couldn’t control them.
“Belle?”
“Yes, I’m here. As always.”
She made a laugh as she was trying to hide the sniffles, not wanting Nicholas to know she’s crying.
“Can we meet? It’s urgent.”
“Nick, I can’t. I have a dateline to meet and it’s almost up. You know how it’s like; I have tons of things to do. I need to …” She rattles off the list of things she knew had already been done.
“Oh.”
Silence was once again speaking to them, neither knew what to say. Then there was a knock on Annabelle’s office door.
“Someone’s looking for me, probably more work. Have a good, erm, journey. Bye.”
She hung up and rushed to the door to open it.
“Surprise?”
And there he stood in front of her. Nicholas was at her door.
*Author's Thoughts: Just sharing one of my ideas of a story/plot. Hoping that one day, I'll be extremely motivated to finish up at least 1 out of the 4 story ideas that I have currently into a completed novel, published and all. :)
